Cardinal Robert Prevost, has been elected as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
White smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel this afternoon, signaling that the College of Cardinals had chosen a successor to Pope Francis, who died on April 21.
Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square and they erupted in cheers as the bells of the basilica began to toll, confirming the election of a new pontiff. The crowds gathered as word spread throughout Rome that a new pope had been chosen.

A Prayer for Our New Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV
Heavenly Father,
With hearts full of awe and tenderness, we lift up to You our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, and we wrap him in prayer.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Rest upon him with your power and peace.
Give him the strength that is not of this world— Strength rooted in surrender, in wisdom, in mercy.
Pour out upon him Your gifts, that he may walk forward not in fear,
But in Your fire, bearing the light of Christ to the ends of the earth.
O Mary, Mother of the Church, Wrap your mantle around him.
Hold him close as he carries this cross, So that even in moments of weariness, he may always know he is loved, he is not alone.
We pray for his strength.
We pray for his peace.
We pray that all he does may echo the will of the Father,
And lead us ever closer to the heart of Christ.
Amen.
